Smart Toys for Christmas
There are some great smart toys that are in the works, but if you want them for Christmas, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and pre-order. Demand is sure to be high and some may be next to impossible to get if you don’t order them in advance. So, over the next couple of posts, let’s look at some of the new Smart Toys coming to the market.
Leave it to Disney to come up with great wearable technologies for kids. Using Bluetooth, motion sensors, action figures and wearables, they have created a brand new way for kids to interact with stories. They call it Playmation and the first set to be released is based on the Avengers. (Star Wars and Frozen gear is in the works)
The Avengers themed starter pack costs around $120 and comes with Iron Man’s laser blasting gauntlet, two action figures(Caption America and Iron Skull) and two power activator. Placing an action figure on the power activator adds the character to the story much like Disney’s Infinity or Skylanders. Narration come from the power activator and provides basic outlines for play. The starter pack comes with 25 missions, and more are available for download.
Other action figures will be released at the same time as the starter pack. Ultron Bot, Iron Man, Hulkbuster, and Hulk to name a few, can be pre-ordered for $14.96 each. There is also an Ultron Prowler Bot for $39.96.
Two sets of the toys can work together allowing kids to play together to beat the missions. They can also play laser tag with the base station and the adventures are stored so they can pick up a mission where they left off. The mobile app lets kids track progress. The wearables fit adult arms so parents can play along with kids.
Disney is quick to explain that this is not a video game. It is not played in front of a screen, but rather encourages the child to move, calling out instructions along with the mission. “Playmation is an entirely new category of play – unlike anything you’ve ever experienced” they say on their website. If you do want this for Christmas, pre-ordering is a good idea. The toy is set to be released on October 4, and you can get it gift wrapped from Amazon.
